From IELTS to University: A Guide for International Students

If you are planning to study at university in the UK or another English-speaking country, IELTS can be an important step in the process. Many universities ask for proof of English level, and IELTS Academic is one of the best-known options. UCAS provides a good overview for international applicants, and UKCISA offers practical guidance on visas, fees and student life.

Why study IELTS in Southampton with Lewis School?

Lewis School is based in Southampton city centre, next door to Solent University. For students who are thinking about higher education, this is a real advantage: you are studying in a university city, in a school with a long history of preparing students for IELTS and progression to degree study.

Southampton has two universities: Solent University and the University of Southampton. The University of Southampton is a Russell Group university and is currently ranked 52nd in the world by TIME.

Many of our former students have gone on to study at university in the UK and in other countries.

At Lewis School, we offer 3-week and 12-week IELTS training courses. Our courses provide intensive preparation for the IELTS Academic exam and focus on the skills and language you need to succeed. They include all learning materials, optional tutorials, regular practice, a mock exam with feedback, free study clubs and a certificate of completion. We can also give general advice on university applications and choosing a suitable course. We can also explain options such as pre-sessional courses, foundation programmes and retaking IELTS if you do not achieve your target score.

Our guide to university applications

1. Check what score you really need

Different universities and courses ask for different IELTS scores. Always check the exact requirements on the university website, including minimum scores in each skill.

2. Make sure you choose the right test

Students applying to university usually need IELTS Academic, not IELTS General Training. Before you book, check the university’s admissions page to confirm which test they accept.

3. Start early

You should allow time to prepare, book the test, receive your result and, if necessary, retake the test.

If you are applying for undergraduate study in the UK, check UCAS dates and deadlines early.

4. Types of university courses

Undergraduate courses are first degrees such as BA and BSc. They usually last three years. Some include a foundation year if extra preparation is needed.

Postgraduate courses come after a first degree. These include Master’s degrees (MA, MSc) and research degrees such as PhD.

5. Choose the right university and course

Think about course content, entry requirements, location, teaching style, fees and career opportunities. Rankings can help, but the course itself is more important.

You can compare universities using sites such as:

6. Read course pages carefully

University course pages usually include:

  • IELTS requirements
  • course content
  • assessment methods
  • fees and dates

Use these to build a shortlist of realistic options.

7. Understand the application process

Most undergraduate applications go through UCAS. Postgraduate applications are usually made directly to the university.

8. How to take the IELTS test

IELTS can be taken:

  • on computer
  • on paper (in some locations)
  • online in many countries

The Speaking test is usually with an examiner, either face to face or by video.

Important: IELTS has announced that paper-based testing will end in many markets from mid-2026, so you should check the latest options when booking.

9. What if you do not get the score you need?

If you do not achieve your target score, you still have options:

  • Retake IELTS when you are ready
  • Take a pre-sessional English course at your university
  • Consider a foundation programme

Check directly with each university, as options vary.

10. Practical advice for international students

You should also research visas, finances, accommodation and deadlines. UKCISA is one of the best sources of reliable information.
