Important UK Laws

UK law may be different from the law in your country. Make sure you understand these important rules.

Alcohol

You must be 18 or over to buy alcohol in the UK. It is also illegal to buy alcohol for someone under 18.

Shops, pubs and bars may ask for photo ID if you look young. Many places use Challenge 25, which means you may be asked for ID if you look under 25.

Smoking and Vaping

You must be 18 or over to buy cigarettes or vapes.

Smoking is not allowed in enclosed public places, including:

• pubs
• restaurants
• shops
• public buildings
• public transport

Some places also have their own rules about vaping.

Drugs

Many drugs are illegal in the UK. It is illegal to have, use, give or sell these drugs.

If the police find illegal drugs on you, you may be arrested. Drug offences can lead to:

• a warning
• a fine
• a criminal record
• prison

Criminal Damage

Damaging property is illegal. This includes:

• graffiti
• breaking windows
• damaging public or private property

If you do this, you may have to pay for the damage, pay a fine, or go to court.

Shoplifting

Shoplifting is theft.

If you steal from a shop, staff may stop you and call the police. You may be arrested and could receive a criminal record.

Knives and Weapons

Do not carry a knife or any other weapon.

In the UK, carrying a knife in public without a good reason can be a criminal offence. Carrying a gun or another weapon illegally is also a serious offence.

If you carry or use a weapon, you may be arrested and could go to prison.

Litter

Do not drop litter, cigarette ends or chewing gum on the ground.

This is illegal in the UK. If you are caught, you may have to pay a fixed penalty fine.
