With our first junior summer centres since the pandemic, a busy adult school and plenty of sunshine, it’s been a great summer here at Lewis.
A Brand New Campus
It was our first year at our new Winchester Junior Centre. As you may know, Winchester is one of England’s most beautiful cities and is just 20km from our main school in Southampton. Based at the University of Winchester, we were just a 10- to 15-minute walk from the city centre. This meant it was easy not only to visit the stunning cathedral and the Great Hall with its famous Round Table from the legend of King Arthur, but also to pop into town for games by the river, hilltop climbs for breath-taking views and treasure hunts around its historic streets.
The university provided impressive modern facilities in contrast to the ancient centre. The hi-tech disco nights were certainly popular with the students and the huge dining hall certainly had a wow factor! Accommodation was residential and everything was within a few minutes’ walk.
Our Southampton Junior Centre had a more intimate atmosphere, being based at our main school and offering homestay accommodation. Joining our groups were a large number of students who arrived individually. Across our two centres, we were delighted to welcome junior students from over 20 different countries.
Trips, Theatre and More!
Activities programmes were buzzing with life and fun at both centres. Trip destinations included London, Oxford, Bath, Salisbury, Bournemouth, Portsmouth, the Dorset Coast, the New Forest and a ferry trip to nearby Hythe. For most trips, we had glorious sunshine!
Summer theatre programmes returned too, with a wonderful group of students opting to take the English & Theatre course at our Winchester Centre. Our talented students prepared and performed musicals such as School of Rock, The Lion King and Wicked. You can read more about their experience here and video highlights will be appearing on our YouTube channel shortly.
Group leaders had the chance to attend a teacher training course at our Winchester Centre. Meanwhile, our online teacher training courses are continuing to prove popular, in addition to our online English lessons and online storytelling programmes.
A Lively Adult School
Our busy summer also included a buzzing Adult School, with students from over 30 different countries joining us for General English and IELTS courses. We enjoyed sunny trips and barbecues, and the return of our Friday Fiesta – our weekly ceremony where we present leaving certificates, congratulate our Students of the Week and enjoy doughnuts and other sweet treats in our garden.
A big thank you to all our students, agents, group leaders and staff who made this summer special.

Doga, Turkey
There were so many nationalities in one class and it was a magnificent experience to see how is the situation in other countries. Teachers gave us lots of opportunities to talk. I have never got bored. 1.5 hours passed as a minute.
Apostalis, Greece
I think it was the best experience I’ve ever had!
