students outside Salisbury Cathedral

We were delighted to welcome a lovely group of students from Italy last week.  Alongside project-based English lessons, they enjoyed an exciting programme of visits, including two trips to London with stops at the British Museum and National Gallery, as well as a memorable trip to Shakespeare’s Globe. The week offered a great balance of language learning, culture, shared experiences and fun!

English Lessons that Build Confidence

During the week, students attended English lessons that focused on strengthening communication skills, widening vocabulary, and helping students feel more confident using English in real-life situations. Lessons were interactive and practical, with plenty of speaking tasks and teamwork, and finished with group presentations where students pitched a new product they had invented.

Cultural Discovery in London

The programme also included a series of educational excursions. Among the highlights were the two trips to London, where students not only went sightseeing but also explored world-famous museums and galleries. At the British Museum, they explored artefacts from ancient civilisations, while the Natural History Museum impressed the group with its exhibitions on nature, science, and evolution, within a breath-taking Victorian building. The National Gallery gave students the chance to see iconic artworks by Van Gogh, Turner, da Vinci and more!

Stepping into Shakespeare’s World

Another memorable visit was to the Globe Theatre, a faithful reconstruction of the original Elizabethan theatre connected with William Shakespeare. Students learned how plays were performed in the 16th and 17th centuries, how the open-air theatre was designed, and what theatre audiences were like at that time. This experience truly brought English literature to life, helping the students to understand the historical context of Shakespeare’s plays and their place in society.

Discovering History in Salisbury and Southampton

The group also travelled to Salisbury, where they visited the stunning cathedral (see top of page). This beautiful Gothic building, with the tallest spire in England at 123m, displays one of only four copies of the Magna Carta. One of the most important documents in English history, the Magna Carta established the principle that everyone, including the king, is required to follow the law. Back in Southampton, students explored the city’s past through visits to the Tudor House, which shows everyday life across several centuries, and the SeaCity Museum’s Titanic exhibition, which tells the story of how the ship’s journey began in Southampton in 1912, and of the impact the Titanic disaster had on the city.

A Week to Remember

For us at Lewis School, it was such a pleasure to see students developing and activating their English while discovering British history and culture first-hand. We hope this language training experience was motivating and memorable for all the group. Thanks to all of you for your wonderful enthusiasm and hard work. Well done!
