Lewis School Diary – Autumn 2024

Italian group in London

Autumn at Lewis School was surprisingly warm and – as always – lots of fun! At the beginning of the season, we were joined by two wonderful junior groups, from Italy and Thailand. Both had an action-packed week of lessons, games, museum visits, trips to other cities and more! Lessons were project-based and built up to some excellent presentations.

Here’s a video we made of our Thai group, including their trip to the top of the Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth.

In October we also welcomed an adult group from France, with whom we enjoyed a guided tour of Winchester Cathedral and a cream tea!

We couldn’t resist dressing up for Halloween – lots of you enjoyed the photo of Suzie dressed up as a witch at Reception! With the help of our students Pablo, Ali and Rakan, we even made our very own Halloween movie!

Speaking of movies, a new resident arrived in Southampton – Paddington Bear! To promote his new film, he had his very own bench next to West Quay Shopping Centre and the city walls, where he was eating (of course) a marmalade sandwich.

And for one more film, check out the video above, from Chris’s class!

Autumn was a busy time for our marketing team, too, with Larissa visiting our agents in Brazil, Anh travelling to Vietnam and Marcella meeting many more agents at the StudyWorld online conference. On the teacher training side, Abby ran two webinars on ‘Low-Preparation Activities to Engage Your Learners’. Together, these attracted nearly 600 registrations! You can watch the full event on our YouTube channel.

More recently, everything’s had a particularly Christmassy feel. Southampton’s Christmas market opened in mid-November with a wonderful event, Countdown to Christmas. Characters in costume performed street theatre up and down the city centre – there was everything from polar bears to giant illuminated reindeer! Music filled the streets and we got to ride on a giant Ferris wheel above the city. This, the ice rink and the German-style huts selling gifts and street food will be here until the New Year.

Other activity highlights included a fish and chips dinner, a firepit evening and augmented reality darts. At the end of November, we had our first snow of the year, and the month ended with a trip to London and its excellent Winter Wonderland attraction.

The Christmas-themed fun is continuing into December. Breaktimes have been filled with games and prizes with our Lewis Advent calendar. Our students pull out a note revealing the surprise activity of the day – we’ve had coin hunts, raffles, guessing games and more!
