Alistair Walker

Owner / Director

Hello! I'm Alistair, the owner and Director of the Lewis School of English. The school was established by Mr Lewis in 1976 and I took over from him in 1994. So I've had the privilege of meeting many thousands of students since then - many smiling faces and happy memories!

I started my career as an English Language teacher and quickly became very passionate about language learning. This culminated in a Masters degree in second language acquisition.

My core responsibility is to ensure that we create the best possible conditions for learning to take place - that you all feel comfortable and relaxed in our learning environment. Your welfare and safety are our top priority.

My door is always open. Feel free to contact me anytime if you have any concerns over the quality of service being offered to you.

Helen Barrs

Director of Studies

Hello! I’m Helen and I’m the Director of Studies (DoS) at Lewis School. I’m responsible for testing and timetabling all our adult students and I manage the Adult School academic team. I’ve worked at the Lewis School since 2009, joining the school originally as a teacher, but also working as Homestay Officer, Social Activities Manager and Assistant Director of Studies, before becoming DoS in 2015. I studied a BA in Modern Languages at the University of Sheffield and speak French, Spanish and Italian. I lived in Spain and Quebec as part of my studies, but have only taught English here in the UK. I’m originally from Newcastle-upon-Tyne, but moved to Southampton in 2008. I teach a variety of courses, including General English, 1:1 Lessons, IELTS and Online Lessons. Please ask me about choosing suitable courses, your timetable and improving your grammar!

Charlotte Wright

Senior Teacher & Teacher Trainer

Hi! I’m part of the academic management team at Lewis, and a teacher trainer on our CertTESOL courses, so you’ll often see me in the office or in various classrooms around the school. I originally joined Lewis in 2009 before moving to Australia to complete an MA in Applied Linguistics. I’ve taught general English and exam courses, and now divide my time between the Adult School and the Teacher Training Centre. Ask me about the courses we run in either department and I’ll be happy to help! I love travelling and other cultures so will probably have a few questions for you as well!

I have worked at the Lewis School for many years and been involved in a wide range of courses. These days, it's the IELTS classes that I teach the most. I love watching students grow in confidence and go on to university. It's such a privilege to play a part in that development.

I enjoy teaching in Southampton, but I have also taught overseas, most recently with the British Council in South Korea. Teaching English and learning about other cultures is my great joy.

Teacher & Social Activities Co-ordinator

I joined the Lewis School team in September 2016 after gaining my CertTESOL qualification from the Lewis Teacher Training Centre. Just over a year before this I completed my bachelor's degree in Social Anthropology at the University of Southampton. Southampton is my home town, so don’t hesitate to ask me any questions about things to do in the area! I lived in the Netherlands, where I studied for 6 months at Utrecht University, and I recently volunteered in Ghana for 3 months as a business consultant. I love meeting people from different countries and cultures whether through travelling or teaching and my position at the Lewis School is certainly a great place for this. I currently teach both General English and 1:1 Lessons and I am in charge of the social activities programme. I am an active person who enjoys new adventures. Outside work, I enjoy bouldering, camping and travelling. I love everything Harry Potter.

Richenda Askew

Head of Teacher Training

Richenda Askew

Head of Teacher Training

Hi! I’m Head of Teacher Training at Lewis. Our department is responsible for training teachers from the UK and overseas, ensuring that our own teachers are kept up-to-date with their professional development, as well as training new teachers on the Trinity CertTESOL course. In addition, I have the pleasure of visiting other countries to offer training courses and advice. If I’m not training teachers, I am teaching English and trying to keep up with my own studies.

I’m lucky enough to have lived in 10 countries and have, therefore, lived and worked with a variety of cultural groups.  Cultural awareness and education is a passion of mine. Before I trained as a teacher, I worked for many years in hospitals as a Speech and Language Therapist. Outside work I love walking in the countryside, travel, good food and being with my family.

CPD Manager & Teacher Trainer

Hi! I'm a teacher and teacher trainer at the Lewis School, so you will usually find me in the classroom with students or trainee teachers. I've worked at Lewis School since 2006 and, having taught in both the Junior Centres and Adult School, I now support our junior and adult teachers with their professional development. In my 'former life' I worked in musical theatre, and so enjoy getting involved with Theatre Express whenever I can! I also volunteer and perform with a Winchester-based theatre group in my free time, and if I'm not doing that, I'll probably be at St Mary's cheering on the mighty Saints FC!

Head of Marketing & Operations

Hello! I am Marcella, Head of Marketing and Operations at the Lewis School. I began my career as a teacher of English and then a school director in Italy. Then my curiosity for different cultures and passion for different language learning processes saw me travel extensively around the world before relocating to the UK over 20 years ago. It was then that I moved into Marketing and Operations. I have been with Lewis since 2010 and truly enjoy it.

You can contact me for individual and group information, specialist projects and programmes in either Italian or English. I will be able to find the best solution for you and/or your students.

Hi everyone! I’m Maria, a Russian-speaking regional marketing manager. Having obtained a Master’s degree in Management at the University of Southampton, I’ve been with the Lewis School for the last 6 years and it’s been a fascinating period of exploring UK life and culture. If you are an agent, a group leader or a student from any Russian-speaking country and/or Eastern Europe, I’m here to help you with any questions on co-operation with the school, programme selection, individual and group bookings, as well as any issues related to studying and living in the UK.

Geoffrey Currie

Junior Centres Manager

Geoffrey Currie

Junior Centres Manager

Hello!
My name is Geoffrey. I'm the Junior Centres Manager for the Lewis School of English. I’m responsible for the junior programmes throughout the year. We're working on an exciting new activities programme based on the 'house' system, a British school tradition. I am currently working on a Trinity Diploma in TESOL and have been a teacher for 17 years. In my free time, I love reading books - fiction and history, mostly. I also cycle quite a bit and travel to country houses at the weekends.

Ryan Kaluarachchi

Junior Centres Co-ordinator

Ryan Kaluarachchi

Junior Centres Co-ordinator

Hello! I am the Junior Centres Co-ordinator and also a teacher. Despite my young age, I’ve gained few years of teaching experience after completing my CELTA and TEFL qualifications. I love being creative. I studied Media at university and I regularly make music. Occasionally I help Tom with video making but I mainly implement my creativity in the classroom. I am also completely fascinated by culture and travelling. I believe a lot can be learnt from different cultures and in my opinion language schools can be the perfect starting point for this. The positive, friendly atmosphere, different ways of thinking and the people I meet daily makes this a job I really cherish.  I have mainly taught in England at different schools but I have also taught and lived in Italy for one year. So yes, I know how daunting it can be adapting to a new environment. This is why the Lewis team and I will do the best we can to make you feel comfortable and help you to get to know British culture.

I'm from South Korea, and I first came to England about 20 years ago to study English at the Lewis School. My English is much better now compared to that time!

I used to work in the Welfare Team, but now I deal mainly with finance. I love talking to students and learning about their culture. I am quite keen on gardening, so I spend most weekends in my garden. Believe it or not, I actually love English weather! We all grow with experience, so come and experience England with Lewis! It's something I will never regret.
